Ms. Alexandra Lehmann, Attaché at the EU Delegation in Beijing and the STF Lead Expert Mr. Clemens Smolders attended the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Beijing Foreign Studies University on Sep.24

Ms. Alexandra Lehmann, Attaché at the European Union Delegation in Beijing and the Lead Expert of the STF Programme, Mr. Clemens Smolders, attended the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Beijing Foreign Studies University on 24 September, 2011. This event was attended by more than 1,000 officials, foreign dignitaries, BFSU alumni, teachers and students.
                                       
The ceremony was attended by a host of officials, led by Chen Zhili (陈至立, the lady in the front row of the top right picture), vice-chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. The introductory part of the ceremony was hosted by Yang Lan (杨澜), a well-known TV host in China, and graduate from BFSU. She interviewed two graduates from the first intake of students in 1941 (see the picture below).
 
                                         
 
“BFSU was born in the flames of the war for the salvation of our nation”, said Prof. Chen Yulu, the President of BFSU, in his opening speech. He further mentioned that amongst the 80,000 graduates of the university, over 1,400 have been appointed as ambassadors, earning the name and reputation of the “cradle of diplomats”. BFSU has employed over 4,000 foreign teachers, one of whom, Prof. Isabel Crook (the lady holding the award in the picture below) received an award during the ceremony. The university currently teaches 49 foreign languages, and it aims to increase this to 90 languages by 2020.
 
                                         
 
The actual ceremony was hosted by Prof. Yang Xueyi, Chairman of the Council of BFSU, who introduced the keynote speakers, beginning with the President of the BFSU, who was followed by Prof. Hao Ping, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education and the previous President of BFSU. Other speeches were given by Mr. Zhao Fengtong, the Secretary of the Education Committee of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, as well as Mr. Zhai Jun, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ambassador of Japan, Mr. Uchiro Niwa spoke as a representative of the foreign community.
 
The event was concluded with an award ceremony for people who had made their mark on the development of BFSU.
